The Zambian government and the mining industry have agreed to resolve the case of electricity tariffs out of court, state media reported on Tuesday.
On April 2, 2014, the country’s energy regulator announced a 28.8 percent increase in electricity tariffs for mining firms, a move which the firms contended had come amid low copper prices on the international market.
The mining firms then dragged the government to court, seeking a judicial review which was granted.
But Finance Minister Felix Mutati said the electricity tariffs could not be discussed in the courts of law but through a roundtable discussion.
During the presentation of the 2017 national budget, the finance minister said the government had commenced discussions with mining firms and other bulk power consumers to ensure that they start migrating towards cost-reflective tariffs. Enditem
