Veteran politician and renowned local governance expert, Professor Kwamena Ahwoi, has cautioned that a vote for the NPP in the upcoming general election will spell doom for the youth of this country.
According to Prof. Ahwoi, the largest opposition party has no track record of policies that have long-term benefits for the development of the country and cannot be entrusted with the mandate again to govern the country.
“NDC is a party of the youth and for the youth. Today, they claim I am old. I joined the NDC as a minister when I was 29. Today, look at the government appointees, they are young, intelligent and energetic. The Hannah Bissiws, Dr Omane Boamahs and the rest who are bold. However, the NPP says we have picked children to manage the affairs of the state. Is it not the young appointees such as us who turned around the fortunes of Ghana in the early ‘80s under Jerry Rawlings? Wasn’t Rawlings 33 when he became Head of State?” he asked.
Old men and women
He noted further that: “The future is not for the youth. Today is for the youth. If we don’t empower them today, and leave everything to the old men and women, because they have still not attained their dreams, we shall always remain like the NPP. We shall never move forward as a nation’’.
“They did the same thing to Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Jerry Rawlings, the late President Atta Mills and today it’s John’s turn. The NPP’s problem is about who is leading the nation as if they are nonentities, ordinary people. But we are not perturbed and we shall remain focused in shaping the future of Ghana.”
“The difference between the personality of John Dramani Mahama and Nana Akufo-Addo is that, John Mahama is humble, he is respectful, he does not speak by heart, I mean he thinks carefully before making any utterances. When I was a minister several years ago, he held a deputy ministerial portfolio. But up to date even as President, he gives me that respect and calls me Uncle Kwamena and salutes me.”
Relationship
Prof Ahwoi shared with supporters what he termed the difference between the NDC and the NPP.
“The NDC remains united. NPP today is disintegrated. They don’t have a Chairman, a General Secretary and 1st National Vice Chairman. Victory is associated with unity. It is like a broom, together they serve the right purpose. This year, we shall thrash the NPP in the general election,” he emphasised.
He said the unity within the NDC had made it possible for the party to launch its manifesto, adding that the document had development as its objective and challenged the NPP to give plans they have for Ghana. “They have nothing compared to that of the NDC which has clearly spelt out how its party intends to implement all the policies promised. It spells out which specific projects, roads, hospitals, schools will be funded by loans, internally generated funds and so on. This is what we call strategic planning”, he added.
“NPP promises one district, one factory. But tell them, President John Mahama has connected districts with good roads, electricity and water. If all these were not done, how was the NPP going to implement that policy. They also talk about one village one dam.
It is clear the NPP is just making vague promises. But Ghanaians are not as gullible as they think,” he said.
Chief of Staff
The Chief of Staff (CoS), Mr Julius Debrah, who is leading the five-day campaign tour of the region, assured the people of President Mahama’s commitment to sustaining ongoing projects to open up the area.
He also spent time explaining the Green Revolution in the NDC 2016 manifesto which he said would give a major boost to the agric sector.
“One key sector President John Mahama promises to prioritise during his second term is agriculture. The NDC will set up district mechanisation centres where tractors and other farm equipment will be available for lease. Farmers will be eligible to pay after selling their harvest. This initiative will break the ‘cost’ barrier and we hope it will increase yields, jobs and exports,” he explained.
Mr Debrah also appealed to the electorate to trust the President on his track record and give him a second term just us Ghanaians did for former Presidents Kufuor and Rawlings.
