Chairman Wontumi who is said to be the patron of the pro-government vigilante group, is expected to answer questions about the activities of the group and why it was formed in the first place.
Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako popularly called Chairman Wontumi, has been summoned to the seat of government over the recent acts of a vigilante group known as Delta Force.
According to reports, the NPP member was summoned at the Flagstaff House to explain circumstances under which the group hounded the Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator, George Adjei out of his office.
About 200 members of Delta Force on Friday, March 24 2017, stormed the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council to stop Mr. Adjei from performing his duties, citing that they cannot work with him because he was not a native of the region. The group’s action has been regarded a clear disrespect to the President who appointed George Adjei as the Security Coordinator for the region.
It was the second time the group was attacking the council requesting the removal of Adjei from the post. The group’s grudge was that the security coordinator wasn’t part of the struggle to ensure President Akufo-Addo’s victory and hence, should not be appointed to head them.
The group who wanted one of their members no the seat, vandalized some properties as they angrily attacked Mr. Adjei, forcing him out of the office. But for the intervention of the police service, they group may have physically harmed the coordinator.
Questions and speculations as to the people behind the attack have now led to the Presidency’s summon of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP. Chairman Wontumi is believed to have links with some members of the pro-NPP group which operates in the region.
Wontumi who is said to be the patron of the pro-government vigilante group, is expected to answer questions about the activities of the group and why it was formed in the first place.
A day after the violent attack, leader of the group, Kwadwo Bamba was arrested and granted bail the next day. The Police in Kumasi had also arrested five members of the Delta Force. The five include Kwadwo Fosu Bamba, who is the Commander of the group, Awal Sadat Abubakar, Abubakar Sadiq Abdul Hameed, Jamil Issah and Hamza Mohammed.
PRO of the regional police command, ASP Nketiah Yeboah, said three of the arrested members of the Delta Force reported themselves to the police and urged the other suspects to follow suit to assist in investigations.
Kwadwo Bamba, has apologized to President Nana Akufo-Addo and members of the NPP for the assault on George Adjei. He has expressed regret over the group’s actions pleading with the President to forgive them.
On better ways to handle the RCC attack, the Ashanti Regional Secretary of the NPP, Sam Pyne has called for the involvement of National Security, rather than party leadership. According to him, the victim of the attack -George Adjei is a government appointee and not just an NPP officer. This according to him is why the matter should be dealt with by National Security.
