Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Agyapong has disclosed why he supported members of the Delta Force, a vigilante group affiliated to the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
According to him, members of the group sacrificed a lot to ensure that the party won the elections especially in the Ashanti Region.
“I supported them because for the past eight years they have been loyal to the NPP so I felt they should also be given work to do” he said in an interview on UTV’s Adekye Nsroma.
Kennedy Agyapong was reacting to some members of the vigilante group who stormed a Kumasi-based circuit court; leading to the escape of 13 of its members who had been arrested.
Delta Force had earlier ransacked the office of the newly-elected Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator leading to their arrest and according to Ken Agyapong, “NPP party did not handle the case well…I said it was wrong for them to be taken to court. I advised that they should be allowed to openly apologise to Ghanaians and not be arrested…If they had listened to me and allowed them to apologise, this would not have happened…”
According to the Assin Central MP, “…we promised them jobs and one thing I said that I will not take back is that we will give them jobs even if they don’t have certificate because when they were protecting ballot boxes they were not asked of their certificate. I pleaded with them to help us win the election and if we win they will get jobs…I am not their coordinator but they look up to me”.
Condemning the actions of the Delta Force, he said: “what they did is wrong. They have disgraced and disappointed the NPP and it is so because when you are saying the truth in the party, they say book oh! book oh!! and nobody listens. People who have sacrificed their lives for the party; you don’t have to treat them that way”.
No More Support
Kennedy Agyapong has however made a U-turn saying he will no longer support the group. He said he had made plans for members of the Delta Force to be employed but due to the group’s recent ‘unlawful’ action, he is no longer going to go ahead.
“They have disgraced us…their actions have even overshadowed the 90 days of President Akufo Addo in office. Infact I shivered when I heard what they had done. They should have exercised patience because I had plans to get them employed. How can you do that…I am no longer going to support them”.
