People should stop lambasting EC Chair Charlotte Osei simply because she was bold enough to do the right thing by disqualifying some aspirants from contesting the presidency, Mohammed Ayeetey Okwabi popularly known as the ‘Kpakpakpa’ man has said.
The Kpakpakpa man has jumped to the EC chair’s defence at a time when she is faced with a number of attacks over the disqualification of some presidential aspirants.
Some 13 presidential hopefuls have been sidelined from contesting the upcoming December elections because they failed to meet the criteria set out in CI 94 – the Constitutional Instrument governing this year’s polls.
But some of the disqualified persons have not taken kindly to the act with the APC flagbearer Hassan Ayariga even describing Charlotte Osei as ‘Stupid’ and ‘Foolish’ following his disqualification.
Three others including the PPP flagbearer Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom and NDP flagbearer Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings have also filed writs in court seeking to overturn the decision by the Electoral Commission.
But Mohammed Okwabi believes the criticisms and attacks levelled against Charlotte Osei are unwarranted and unnecessary.
According to him, the EC chair should be praised for being brave enough to dismiss the 13 contestants and not bastardised for the act. He says the former commission chair Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan was too lenient at the time hence his inability to enforce the rules to the letter.
“It seems like by then Afari Gyan was too lenient to them (presidential aspirants). Even not everyone knew there were such mistakes but this woman came and highlight it to a lot of people. So now people see say eeii, something like this dey.”
He is however cautioning the EC Chair against acts that will suggest bias towards a particular candidate in the upcoming polls saying it has the potential to cause mayhem in the country.
“Okay fine, I heard there will be a sitting on the 14th of next month. I want the court and the judicial system to sit down and do things correct because you EC, our life is lying on you. Try and make a good thing…we don’t want confusion.”
