President Nana Akufo-Addo has decried the increasing rate of road accidents in the country.
According to the president, directives had been given to the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) to work with the relevant institutions to check the indiscipline and disregard for road traffic regulations.
An award scheme he indicated would be instituted to reward transport unions whose drivers recorded the least accidents.
The NRSC recorded over 11,000 accidents this year; about 2,000 more cases from the 2015 figure of about 9,000. The Commission said it failed to meet its 2016 target in reducing traffic-related deaths to 1,000.
Speaking at a meeting held with leadership of the various transport unions, President Akufo-Addo said a National Training Academy would also be established to help train drivers This was part of the president’s Akufo-Addo three-day visit to the Ashanti Region.
Present at the meeting were officers from the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council, Ghana Private Road and Transport Union (GPRTU), Concerned Transport Operators, Inter-Country Transport Union, Commercial Drivers Association, Mighty Transport Union and Progressive Transport Owners Association (PROTOA).
The president was accompanied by some Ministers of State including, Mr. Allan Kyeremateng, the Trade and Industry Minister, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, Food and Agriculture Minister, Mr. Albert Kan-Dapaah, National Security Minister, Mr. Isaac Asiamah, Sports Minister, Mr. Ofori Asiamah, Transport Minister, and Madam Cecelia Abena Dapaah, Aviation Minister.
Also with him were Members of Parliament (MPs) from the region and national officers of the NPP.
