The Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) ASP Mohammed Yusif Tanko has revealed that his outfit may not be able to effect the arrest of the Asawase Constituency lawmaker, Mohammaed Muntaka Mubarak should he carry through his threat of forming a vigilante group.
An incensed Muntaka on Monday threatened to form a vigilante group to counter attacks of persons believed to be members the New Patriotic Party (NPP) if the police failed to act within a stipulated period adding that he is disappointed in the conduct of the police.
He claimed these persons he described as hooligans have gained notoriety in seizing government installations with impunity and attacked staff while the police looked on unconcerned.
But ASP Mohammed Yusif Tanko on the Ultimate Breakfast Show said it will be difficult to arrest him if it turns out to be true because he is an MP and arresting him must go through certain processes.
“We cannot arrest him because he is an MP. We will however be monitoring and investigating the matter and will urge the MP to help us if he knows who the victims are. Indeed we have received reports of some persons taking over government installations but we are unable to link them to any political party.
He advised the lawmaker and minority chief whip to bring the victims to write their statements to help them in their investigations since the MP himself is not a victim and does not deserve briefing of the extent to which the investigations have reached.
“If he contacts us he will be briefed but should he do, we will be able to update him from time to time on the extent of the investigations into the matter”, he stated.
