President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has told the newly sworn in Ministers of State that his government must not and should not fail Ghanaians due to the overwhelming support shown the party in last year’s elections.
Speaking during the swearing in ceremony of the first batch of Ministers approved by parliament at the seat of government on Friday January 27, Mr Akufo-Addo said: “Ladies and gentlemen, let me be the first to congratulate each and every one of you on your appointment. You deserve it. I am confident that with God’s guidance, you will discharge the functions of your office to the satisfaction of the Ghanaian people.
“You have just sworn three oaths – that of allegiance, that of the office and that [of secrecy]. The sum total of all these oaths that you have solemnly sworn is to uphold the interest of the public, of the constitution and to do so without ill will…or favour to any person.
“It is a heavy responsibility, especially since the Ghanaian people have been clear and emphatic in demanding a change in the nation’s direction, a change in the quality of governance, a change in the management of the national economy, and a change in national attitudes.
“That is why we are here, that is why they voted for us so overwhelmingly. The people have elected us to respond to this demand for change and provide leadership that will ensure that it benefits in the progress of our nation.
“We are required to fulfil the commitments of our mandate and I am certain that with God’s guidance, sincerity of purpose, integrity of character, hard work and genuine collaboration together, we shall deliver and honour these commitments.
“Honourable ministers, as you know, the issue of corruption in the public life was a major topic in the elections. The Ghanaian people want an honest government, they want a government that will protect the public purse and ensure value for money in all public transactions, we cannot fail them, and we must not fail.”
