Chairperson for the Electoral Commission, Charlotte Osei has in an exclusive interview with the EIB Network thanked all stakeholders for a “successful” organization of the 2016 elections.
The polls to determine a President and new parliamentarians were closed at 5pm Wednesday with a few reports of clashes and challenges in the process while two constituencies are yet to complete the voting process.
Speaking in a live broadcast from the EC’s National Collation Centre, the boss hailed the citizenry for upholding the country’s long-standing accolade of being the beacon of functioning democracy in Africa.
“We are very grateful that we have had very successful elections and the feedback that we’ve had from the voters and the international community has been phenomenal and Ghana has proved again that indeed when it comes to elections in Africa, it is so good. I’m very proud about the work that we’ve done,” Charlotte Osei said.
“We’ve started the counting in most polling stations. It is a transparent and inclusive process and we are looking forward to a very successful conclusion of the voting process.”
The boss of the electoral management body also expressed gratitude to all seven presidential candidates and the 1,150 others seeking for the 275 parliamentary seats for their collaboration in the voting process.
“Thank you to the candidates, thank you to the agents on the kind of collaboration that we’ve seen today even when there were difficult issues, they were resolved through dialogue and then we had a very good process,” Madam Osei added in the interview exclusively aired on EIB Network platforms.
Counting of ballots have begun since the close of polls with some results already trickling in.
