REPORTS reaching Today indicate that Abesim, a town in Sunyani Municipal District in the Brong Ahafo Region, has been hit by acute water shortage, leaving inhabitants to resort to the use of services of water tankers for survival.
According to our correspondent, the whole community and its environs have been experiencing the shortage since the beginning of this week.
Speaking to the media, Brong Ahafo Regional Chief Manager of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Mr. Charles A Brobbey, said the 1.6 million gallons of water used daily by the inhabitants have reduced to 800 thousand, thereby causing them to resort to the use of the services of water tankers and pure water sachets for household chores and other domestic activities.
According to him, “galamsey” activities in the district have caused the Tano River which is usually treated and served to the people to dry up, with parts of it experiencing pollution, thus making it difficult for the GWCL to treat the Abesim water.
He said sections of the district have also resorted to running shifts for water supply so as to enable various communities to have access to water on a daily basis.
Meanwhile, he has advised that chiefs and leaders who are involved in encouraging galamsey operations in the district to desist from it and mobilise people in the community to keep the river clean and ready for treatment.
