The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has gained notoriety for fiercely opposing development projects provided by other political parties that are in government, hence their propaganda ahead of the December 7 presidential and parliamentary elections should not be heeded, President John Dramani Mahama has said.
According to him, the NPP is exhibiting the same attitude its forebears adopted towards Ghana’s first president Dr Kwame Nkrumah when he was undertaking development projects such as the Akosombo Dam and several others, projects that are still benefiting all Ghanaians today.
Speaking at a mini rally at Dadieso in the Western Region on Sunday November 27, Mr Mahama said: “For us in the NDC, we are not divisive, we don’t say because these people did not vote for us and so we will not develop their places. No, we don’t do that.
“If you look at all the 10 regions in Ghana at the moment, if it is roads, we have provided for all; if it is electricity, we have provided for all; if water, we have provided for all; if school buildings and health facilities, we have provided for all.”
He added: “If there will be improvement in the lives of the people, there are certain basic necessities that must be provided to them. The first is good health. You need to get a place to seek healthcare when you are sick. The second thing is education or knowledge. Knowledge is power. If you ask every developed country how they were able to develop their country, they will tell you it was through education and that the people had access to quality education. The next is good water to drink and then electricity. Electricity makes it possible for jobs to grow, and so if you look at the past four years we have developed the nation in these critical areas.
“When Nkrumah was doing investment in infrastructure, some people who are still existing hurled insults at him and told him he was destroying the country with huge debts, but Nkrumah was optimistic to develop the country because he knew he was investing in the people of this country, and so he provided the Akosombo Dam which is serving all of us today.”
