The only New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary candidate to win a seat in the Volta Region, Michael Gyato, has attributed the remarkable victory of the party in the general elections to the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) poor performance in the region.
The NPP normally heads into the elections with low expectations of the Volta Region given the region’s standing as an overwhelming stronghold of the NDC.
However, as results filtered in from the elections, it became clear the party was heading for an improved performance in the region, owing to among other things, a significantly reduced turnout in the region.
In the end, the NPP had improved its presidential performance to about 18 percent and managed to clinch an unlikely seat in one of the 22 constituencies.
Speaking to Citi News, the MP-elect for Krachi East also said the region was no more a stronghold for the NDC as, according to him, more education has ensured that “Ghanaians are now discerning. They can read between the good and the bad.”
“That is why Nana Addo is talking about the free SHS. If we have educated ones, most of them will read between the lines and vote by the convictions. We were all NDC, you go to the university, come back and you are a changed person,” Mr. Gyato said.
