The turf-war between the government and chiefs and people in the 26 districts of the Volta Region on the creation of a new region out of the Volta Region is far from over, Today can report.
Credible information available to the paper indicates that the chiefs and queen mothers, on one hand, and some executive members of the Concerned Volta Youth (CVY), a group made up of Ewe youth from the 26 districts on the other hand, have dropped hints of their intention to meet President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the Flagstaff in the coming days.
The move, according to sources close to the Volta Regional House of Chiefs, forms part of efforts by the chiefs to brief President Akufo-Addo on the division and difficulty the split of the region into two would bring to Ewes.
In the estimation of the chiefs splitting the region into two is not the best way to bridging the development gap in the region.
“We do not buy the idea of splitting the region to have the Oti Region. We do not buy it. There are other ways of improving the development agenda in other sectors of the region where development is not happening,” they argued.
The chiefs were of the view that the move to elect metropolitan municipal district chief executives (MMDCEs) can be a way of fast-tracking the development need of the people rather than necessarily having an Oti Region.
The chiefs and people of the region recently paid a courtesy call on him with the aim of drawing the president’s attention to that.
Some youth groups, Today interviewed, disagreed with the government’s decision to divide the region into two, describing it as needless.
They maintained that the division will also disintegrate the various ethnic groups in the region.
“If the decision to split the region is as a result of lack of access to the regional capital, Ho, by the districts, then the region needs good transportation systems like roads and rail, just as the president has established the ministry of railway [Development] so that we will have easy access to our regional capital.”
For his part, President of the Volta Region House of Chiefs, Nana Soglo Alloh IV, on behalf of the chiefs made a clarion call on government to have a second thought on the idea to split the region.
Addressing the first general meeting of the VRHC in Ho ahead of intended meeting with President Akufo-Addo, Nana Alloh, who is the Paramount Chief of Likpe Traditional Area, stressed that there must be a wider consultation with all chiefs and the indigenes of the Volta Region before any decision is taken.
