Ghana’s leading mobile telecommunication giants, Vodafone Ghana, has lived up to its commitment by empowering young girls through a mentorship programme to aid them in the fulfilment of their dreams.
Under a mentorship initiative as part of the celebration of International Women’s Week, Vodafone Women, a women’s wing with an objective of promoting and mentoring women organised a day’s mentorship programme for over 500 school girls from six junior high schools drawn from the Greater Accra Metropolis.
They girls had the opportunity to receive mentoring on “Becoming bold and courageous” in the pursuit of their dreams and also on the need to prepare and position themselves to become leaders in their schools and communities.
Admonishing the school girls at the Christ the King Church in Accra, Chief Executive Officer of Vodafone Ghana, Yolanda Zoleka Cuba, said the lack of proper mentoring for the girls may result in the girls indulging in sloppy deeds that can ruin their future.
According to her, the global theme for the celebration should not only seek to share rich experience of women achievers but also nurture and prepare the young ones for the future.
“We have a role to play in shaping the future of these young ladies. This mentorship programme is not only about sharing rich experiences but more about preparing the minds of young females for the future of this country. It is our responsibility to empower these young ones to cultivate a certain level of confidence to become whoever they want to be,” she said.
On her part, Director of HR at Vodafone Ghana, Hannah Ashiokai Akrong lauded Vodafone Ghana for their role in the enhancement of women’s equality.
She revealed that the introduction of ‘He for She’ campaign by Vodafone Women will ensure that more women gain the necessary expertise and qualification to compete favourably with their male counterparts.
Madam Akrong mentioned that even though the program was initially for Accra, plans were far advanced to extend it to other regions to strengthen the capacity of women to contribute meaningfully to the development of the nation.
