Ghana’s illustrious son and Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa (UNOWA), Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, says the UN in collaboration with other partners are working to address security challenges that have plunged the Sahel countries into chaos.
In an interview with 3FM Sunrise Morning show host, Winston Amoah, Dr. Chambas acknowledged that the activities of Jihadists and extremists pose a military threat to the Sahel countries. They have also been part of international criminal networks that engage in all forms of crime including drug, human and arms trafficking.
The Sahel countries including Mauritania, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger and Chad, he said are therefore being assisted by the UN to enable them exert control over their territories.
The countries have constituted themselves into the G-5 Sahel countries and have drawn up some 16 initiatives to address these worrying security issues, he said.
According to Dr. Chambas, the UN is coordinating and collaborating with development partners like the European Union, World Bank to strengthen governance in these countries, mobilize women and youth as well as religious groups to effectively coordinate their own efforts to implement these initiatives.
He was positive that with the concerted and coordinated efforts by the UN, EU, World Bank, and other partners, the issues would be addressed.
