Uganda Military Investigates Fake Arms Deal

The Ugandan military on Wednesday said it has started investigating a fake arms deal that was allegedly carried out by some of its officers.

Lt. Col. Paddy Ankunda, army spokesperson told reporters at the military headquarters that the Chief of Military Intelligence is carrying out joint investigations with the police, noting that already two suspects have been arrested, one a soldier and another a civilian.

Ankunda said the fraudsters held a meeting sometime in 2015 with the Polish company Ms. BMP Poland SP ZOO to supply military hardware.

The fraudsters issued bid documents to the company after it had paid 500,000 Euros to them.

Media reports have linked some top military commanders to the fraudulent deal which was allegedly sealed at the Land Forces Headquarters, some 20km north of the capital Kampala.

“We appeal to the public to be aware of these fraudsters masquerading as defense officials and pursuing illegal deals. The joint investigation team will get to the bottom of the matter and anybody found culpable will be handled according to the law of the land,” Ankunda said. Enditem
