President of Uganda Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has ordered the closure of the country’s highest learning institution, Makerere University, “in order to guarantee safety of persons and property”.
Established in 1922, the university remains a citadel of learning in East Africa.
However, it has been recently rocked with strike by lecturers and resultant protests by students.
The strike was called by the lecturers after months of non-payment though the government promised to settle the arrears in November.
The protests, on the other hand, led to clashes between the students and police in Kampala, the country’s capital town.
I have this evening ordered for immediate closure of Makerere University until further notice to guarantee safety of persons and property.
On Tuesday, November 1, President Museveni announced in a statement that he is closing the university in “pursuant to the powers vested in me by the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda and Section 26(2) of the Universities and other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001 as amended”.
The closure is indefinite and has already attracted the displeasure of many in the country.
