Hundreds of commuters from the Tema-Accra train were left stranded at Dzorwulu after a tipper truck damaged the rails.
The tipper truck is owned by Engineers and Planners company. A company allegedly owned by Ibrahim Mahama, brother of former President John Dramani Mahama.
A train official called Mr Yankson told Today. “instead of using the level grounding or crossing allocated to them, the driver decided to use the rails which pulled out the chanks that were holding the wooden slippers of the rail in place thereby dislodging and bending the rails.”
He is added that the train drivers were alerted by a resident about the situation in the morning before the stop else the train would have derailed.
An engineer of the Ghana Railway Union who gave his name as CB further explained that the rails were supposed to be at a distance of 3ft by 6, but since the heavy-duty truck had dislodged the rail, the train would have derailed and people on the train would have been injured and lives could have been lost.
Commuters expressed outrage at the situation as they had to jump out of the train to find an alternative source to continue their journey.
Winifred Quaye, a commuter told Today “this is highly irresponsible of Engineers and Planners, they should have informed the railway corporation so the problem could have been resolved before the train left the station.”
Patrick Segbawu, also a commuter was visibly outraged. “if not for the stranger that alerted the train, we would have been in an accident. The company must be sued.
Officials of Engineers and Planners were not available for comment.
