Many parents and kids have welcomed the prevalence of kids’ salons in the country as most appropriate and convenient for children.
Parents have therefore shifted their attention from the traditional adults and unisex salons to kids’ salons. The sudden interest for kids’ exclusive salons is due to the special attention children get in the salon and its affordability. It has also become a lucrative business venture for salon owners.
Sally Nkrumah owner of Pamper Me Kids Salon at East Legon, says there is demand for kids’ salon because parents have become more concerned with the comfort of their kids as compared to adults’ salon which doesn’t make kids their priority.
According to her, a bad experience she encountered in an adult salon birthed Pamper Me Kids Salon.
“When I gave birth to my first child, I started having issues with salons in general because any time I take her to salon to braid the hair they will give me an apprentice to braid and she will redo the hair more than three to four times before the owner of the salon will say continue. And I thought about it and said the kids also need their environment were there are dedicated staff who will do just kids hair. So that is what gave birth to Pamper Me Salon”.
The salon charges from 30 to 35 cedis per hair and could get about 30 customers on weekends.
The niche market has brought about the importance to train staff on child care and customer relations.
However, the major challenge faced in this business is with the issue of staffing, especially children hair stylists.
“Majority of our hair stylists prefer to do adult hair to kids’ hair. Once you advertise for vacancy and you invite the person for an interview, as soon as you mention its kids salon it deters them from working with you”.
Parents who patronize these salons are highly appreciative for the relief they have brought them and believes the kids salons have come to stay for good.
