“Everybody in this world has something special to offer. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you are coming from, you can still do something to help humanity and that with God, all things are possible,” these were the words of the General Manager of Gold Coast, Mr. Boakye Mensah, when he shared his success story with Weekend Today.
Born as Boakye Mensah on 6th June, 1966 in Adiembra in Offinso in the Ashanti Region to Mr. James K. Brefo, a Catechist and a teacher, and Adwoa Pinamang, a trader, who are all late, the young Boakye knew being focused in life was key to a successful life.
He grew up in Offinso with his four other siblings where he had both his primary and middle school education. He attended Local Authority School for his primary education while he had his middle school education at Methodist Middle School. According to him, the Methodist School was the best at the time in the area, and was grateful to his late father for sending him to the best school.
His quest for academic success pushed him to sit for the Common Entrance Examination when he was in Form Two, and successfully passed the examination. He then earned admission to Kumasi High School (KUHIS) in 1980 where he did his Ordinary and Advanced (O&A) Levels certificate examinations.
It was at KUHIS that Mr. Boakye Mensah started identifying his leadership role as he was made the House Captain of Osei Bonsu House when he was in Sixth Form. After Sixth Form, he did his one-year mandatory national service at the Ghana Water Company (GWC) where he also worked for three more years after his national service as an accounts officer.
Inspired by his late mother and friends whom he said used to tease him because he was smallish, he determined to get more academic laurels by furthering his education. His determination eventually paid off when in 1992 he gained admission to the University of Ghana, Legon, to read Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in Sociology.
Mr. Boakye Mensah did his second national service at the Non-Formal Unit of the Ghana Education Service (GES) at Kwame Danso in the Brong Ahafo Region after Legon. The Judicial Service was his next place of employment after GES. And there he worked as the registrar at the Mampong High Court office of the Judicial Service in the Ashanti Region for one year, and then joined Gold Coast, a fund management company, belonging to Groupe Nduom (GN) in 1998, where he has since been working till date.
According to him, he was introduced to the President of Groupe Nduom, Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, by a cousin who worked with Deloitte.
He was made the Regional Manager of Gold Coast to take care of the Ashanti and Brong-Ahafo branches of the company after he had helped to establish the Obuasi, Sunyani and Kumasi KNUST offices.
Prior to his appointment as General Manager in 2015, Mr. Boakye Mensah was the General Manager responsible for the Fixed Income Portfolio of Gold Coast as well as the Manager for Ashanti Region with oversight responsibilities over Sunyani.
He also holds an MBA in Banking and Finance from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and a SEC -licensed Investment Advisor’s Representative.
As a devout Christian of Baptist denomination, a Deacon, a Counsellor and who also serves as a member of the Personnel Committee, Mr. Boakye Mensah is married to Sandra Boakye, a teacher at Kumasi Wesley Girls’ Senior High School.
They are blessed with two children—Raymond and Isla. Mr. Mensah likes listening to music and watching football at his leisure time.
