It’s almost becoming a trend in the nation that when a successive government is installed, it begins to hound officials from the previous administration.
During the Mills/Mahama administration, some members of then New Patriotic Party (NPP) were sought after to return State assets; key among them was the President of the Fourth Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
In 2010, his vehicles were confiscated by national security.
Years down memory lane and in the era of President Nana Akufo-Addo, the National Organizer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Kofi Adams’ vehicles have been seized by some armed men believed to be national security operatives.
Addressing the issue on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’, the National Youth Organizer Sammy Awuku advised government officials to stop allocating to themselves State properties.
According to him, the culture where when an official is leaving government; he or she carries a State vehicle along should be discouraged.
Sammy Awuku dreaded such attitude might lead to a situation where the State will be compelled to rent from private sector to take care of its officials.
“That policy where when you’re going, you carry a car away; whether NPP or NDC (Chairman) it doesn’t make a lot of sense.
“If you’re in government today, you will have to know that a time will come that you’ll also be forced to render an account. So, let’s leave a better legacy for tomorrow . . . Because if care is not taken, a time will come the State will have to be renting from private people before we can take care of its officials,” he said.
