The General Secretary of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), Ralph A. Apaaya, has died.
He was found dead Saturday morning in his room at Ceetakel Hotel, near the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in the Ashanti regional capital, Kumasi.
The National Chairman of TEWU, Peter Lumor confirmed this to Adom TV’s Nana Yaa Brefo.
Nana Yaa reported that the National Executive Council (NEC) of TEWU and other members of the Union, a branch of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), were in Kumasi for a congress.
She said the congress ended on Thursday, August 11, 2016 but the executive stayed back to deal with bills and other matters.
“They planned to leave this morning but when they called his phone, he didn’t answer,” she noted.
After making frantic calls which all went unanswered, the executive informed the managers of the hotel.
According to Nana Yaa, the wire-netting of the window to Mr. Apaaya’s room was cut to allow his colleagues to peep into the room.
“They saw him lying on the edge of his bed as if he was falling off,” the Adom TV presenter narrated.
A report was made to the police who advised that steps be taken to break into the room since he could be needing urgent help, she said.
The door was brought down but Mr. Apaaya was found dead.
The Asokwa police with men from the Forensic Unit of the Central Police Headquarters in Kumasi came to the scene Saturday afternoon and conveyed the body to the morgue for autopsy.
The late TEWU General Secretary rose to the position in April 2013 after the death of his immediate boss, Mohammed S. Bogobiri who was then General Secretary. He was the Deputy to Mr. Bogobiri.
