Tension is mounting at Agbogbloshie Market in Accra, following a ban imposed on traders who are supporters of opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) against jubilating over their party’s victory in the December 7 general elections.
The ban, Kasapafmonline.com understands was imposed by the Queen mother of the Hawkers market section, which is opposite the popular Yam market.
The Queen mother who is named Mabel, according to sources at the market is a known supporter of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) who always tries to suppress NPP sympathizers.
The NPP Flagbearer Nana Akufo Addo was declared the elected President on December 9, after he polled 5,716, 026 votes to beat the incumbent President John Dramani Mahama who garnered 4,713,277 votes out of the 10,615,361 valid votes cast.
The NPP sympathizers at the market following their party’s victory planned an event Thursday to jubilate over their success, but the Queenmother will have none of that.
Some of the market women have vowed to flout the ban, damning the consequences that may come with their actions.
“Till when will the Queenmother suppress us NPP supporters in this market? We have gone in to hire a DJ so we can celebrate our victory. We have every right to do that, so long as we do that peacefully. She has directed that no one should wear Nana Akufo Addo’s T Shirt or any NPP paraphenalia in the market, how is this possible,” an angry trader quizzed?
The Queen mother has not been available to respond to the allegation leveled against her
