Tensions are high in the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency as some party executives have petitioned President Nana Akufo-Addo to appoint the constituency chairman, Robert Osei-Bonsu, as Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the Ga East Assembly.
The individuals comprising 556 polling station executives, 12 electoral area coordinators and 10 constituency executives have appended their signature to express their unequivocal support for Mr. Osei-Bonsu, as their preferred candidate for the position.
Addressing an emergency press conference held over the weekend, after presenting their petition to the appropriate quarters, the signatories to the petition said the appointment of Mr Osei-Bonsu as the MCE for the Ga East Municipal Assembly will receive the overwhelming endorsement of all and sundry.
They claimed that because of the President’s vision to develop the country through the local governance structure and especially his promise to create one factory in every district, a person like Mr. Osei-Bonsu should be the ideal pick.
“With the implementation of policies like the $1 million per constituency and ‘1-district, 1-factory’, there is the need for an individual with impeccable integrity as well as a demonstrable track record of achievement to oversee such initiatives and in this regard we say boldly unequivocally that our chairman stands tall,” they added.
The action of the grassroots executives is said to have been necessitated by potential influence from “the corridors of power in the constituency”.
According to the reports, those at the top hierarchy are parading an individual who is unknown to many in the constituency as the President’s nominee.
They said an appointment letter purported to be issued by the Office of the President is even making rounds.
The aggrieved executives issued a stern warning that they will resist any attempt by anyone to impose an MCE on them.
“We also respectively state that we will do all that is legally possible to resist the imposition of any other candidate apart from our constituency Chairman with whom we have worked with in the trenches over the years,” the group said.
The Council of Elders of the constituency has also overwhelmingly thrown their support behind the chairman, Robert Osei Bonsu.
Dome-Kwabenya Constituency is the second largest constituency in Ghana.
Since it was created in 2004, it has contributed immensely to the electoral fortunes of the NPP like the enviable record of producing the current third gentleman of the land, Prof. Michael Aaron Oquaye, and the current Deputy Majority Leader, Sarah Adwoa Safo.
