Today can report that there is brewing tension in the Dome-Kwabenya constituency branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Greater Accra Region.
The development, Today understands, follows an entrenched position taken by some NPP executives in the area to have their Constituency Chairman, Mr. Robert Osei-Bonsu, appointed as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ga East.
The NPP constituency executives in Dome-Kwabenya subsequently warned that any attempt to appoint any other person other than Mr. Osei-Bonsu will not bode well for the party in the area.
This was stated in a petition presented by the constituency executives to the NPP national executives at the party’s Asylum Down headquarters, Accra at the weekend.
A copy of the petition, Today was reliably informed, was sent to the Office of the President.
The petition was signed by 556 polling station executives, 12 electoral area coordinators and 10 constituency executives.
They affirmed their unflinching support for Mr. Osei-Bonsu to be appointed as the MCE for Ga East.
Addressing a press conference later, the group stated: “As grassroots of the party, we have consulted widely and can say on authority that the appointment of our chairman as the MCE of Ga East Municipal Assembly will receive an overwhelming endorsement of all and sundry.”
The group claimed that because of the president’s vision to develop the country through the local governance structure and especially his promise to create one factory in every district, a competent person like Mr. Robert Osei-Bonsu should be his ideal pick.
“With the implementation of policies like the one million dollars per constituency and one district, one factory, there is the need for an individual with impeccable integrity as well as a demonstrable track record of achievement to oversee such initiatives, and in this regard we unequivocally say that our chairman stands tall,” they said.
According to the group, their call for Mr. Osei-Bonsu to become the MCE [of Ga East] was necessitated by characters close to the corridors of power in the constituency, who were parading an ‘unknown individual’ to many in the constituency as the president’s nominee for the position of MCE.
Against this background, they warned that they will resist any attempt by anyone or group to impose an MCE on them.
“We also respectfully state that we will do all that is legally possible to resist the imposition of any other candidate apart from our constituency chairman with whom we have worked with in the trenches over the years,” the group averred.
Meanwhile, the Council of Elders of the constituency has also overwhelmingly thrown their support behind Mr. Osei-Bonsu.
