Despite a surge in police patrol in Accra and towns nationwide, there has been a corresponding increase in robbery cases in crime prone areas like Tema and its surrounding areas during this festive season.
According to some residents, “We live in fear because there are many armed robbers who make life uncomfortable for us.”
“My husband was robbed on his way from work. They took away his mobile phones, laptop, and other valuable items,” one Lydia told GhanaWeb.
‘Operation Father Christmas’, was launched by the Ghana Police Service to roll out security arrangements to resolve crime issues in the country.
The Director General of Operations of the Ghana Police Service, Commissioner of Police COP Christian Tettey Yohunoo, stated that scores of police personnel are to be deployed at strategic locations throughout the country to ensure peace and security before, during and after the Christmas festivities.
Some of the dangerous neighbourhoods mentioned by the townspeople were Community 3, 4, 5, 7, 21 and 22.
While the police have assured Ghanaians of an “incident-free” Christmas, residents of and its surrounding Communities are yet to experience a sense of security from the police force.
