CHIEFS and elders of Nii Abo family of Otagbanor in Tema New Town of the Greater Accra Region have accused the Tema Development Corporation (TDC) of allegedly selling their parcels of land at Accra-Tema Motorway roundabout to Engineers and Planners (E&P) Company.
At a press conference held in Tema recently, spokesperson for the family, Nii Asamani Darku, appealed to government to intervene by impressing upon TDC to return to them their 10.45 acres of land sold to E&P.
According to the chiefs and elders, TDC illegally sold the said land to E&P without the knowledge of the owners, a development, they claimed, has created tension between the TDC and Nii Abo family.
They explained that Numo Shaddy Mantey of Nii Abo family at Otagbanor was the legitimate custodian of the said land and thus it would be unfortunate for TDC to sell the land to E&P.
They claimed that Nii Abo family has already sold the said land to an investor from Holland to build a factory that would employ over 3,000 youth in line with the ‘One District One Factory’ policy of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government hence their clarion call on government to intervene.
Nii Asamani Darku pointed out that the investor had already conducted a search on the title of the land from the Land Registry Department at Lands Commission and confirmed that the land indeed belonged to Numo Mantey and his relatives from Otagbanor of Tema Newtown.
The spokes person for the family said they had reported the case to the Tema District Police Command to take the necessary action against Ibrahim Mahama, claimant to the land, but the police were yet to take any action.
“So if our petition fails we would protect our property…because we have title to our land and we have laws in this country,” he added.
When Today contacted the Public Relations Officer of TDC, Ms. Dorothy Asare-Kumah, she confirmed that indeed her outfit had sold the said land to E&P.
Explaining further, she said the land is within the 63 square mile Tema Acquisition Area (TAA) at which government in 1952 compulsorily acquired from three traditional authorities (Nungua, Kpone and Tema) and compensation was fully paid to the owners of the land by government.
Subsequently, government registered it in favour of TDC as the lessee from April 1, 1955.
However, she added that regarding the resort to legal action TDC was not against it all.
