Tackling Unemployment In Ghana

UNEMPLOYMENT is one issue that continues to linger on in this country.  At a point it became so serious that we had jobless graduates in this country form Unemployed Graduates Association of Ghana (UGAG).

IN a country where unemployment is high, and especially where many of the unemployed, fall within the youth bracket, there is an increasing rate in crime and violence.  And that is something that we must work with a sense of urgency to prevent.

LAST week the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) announced that over one million Ghanaians, representing 12 per cent of the country’s labour force, were unemployed.  The GSS made the disclosure in a study it conducted in 2015.

AT least it is good that some figures have been given regarding Ghana’s unemployment rate. This is because it was becoming very difficult for one to know what our unemployment figure albeit many of our teeming youth were without jobs.

TODAY many of our young graduates find it very difficult to get jobs.  A situation which has seen many of them resort to doing menial jobs just to make ends meet.

THE point is that it is not a case that unemployment cannot be addressed in this country, but then the fact is that our leaders do very little to addressing the issue.  It is in the light of the above that the Akufo-Addo administration must ensure that it fixes this problem.

CREATING job opportunities is one of the campaign promises that won the New Patriotic Party (NPP) power in last year’s presidential and parliamentary elections.  In fact, the NPP in its manifesto makes it clear that they will focus more on creating jobs for the unemployed masses in the country.

WELL Today wants to use this medium to remind them of their promise to provide jobs for the large number of unemployed persons in this country.  It was refreshing to hear the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Mr. Ignatius Baffour Awuah, reiterate government’s commitment to dealing with the unemployment situation in the country.

IT is okay to make some of these commitments but Today believes that it is time for action.  And that should be manifested in the government’s efforts aimed at creating jobs for Ghanaians.
