Tweets by the former president reveal that stories circulating on various media platforms on Mahama’s UN appointment is actually not true.
Former President John Dramani Mahama has refuted claims that he received a new appointment from the United Nations (UN).
News broke on Thursday, January 19 that Former President Mahama has been appointed Co-chair of Eminent Persons for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The reports had it that Mahama was appointed alongside Norwegian Prime Minister, Ms. Erna Solberg, to head a group of 16 eminent SDGs advocates.
But Mahama has refuted the claims; clarifying that he has received no new appointment from the United Nations aside the one he received last year. According to the immediate past president, it is likely that the appointment being referred to as a recent one, is the one he received back in 2016 while he was still president.
Mahama made this revelation via his official twitter handle where he wrote:
Folks! I have no new UN appointment. The Co-chair of SDG advocacy group appointment was last year January when I was Prez. Thanks.
What many are sharing are the UN statement from January 2016 announcing the appt & my statements at the 2016 Davos Forum.
Since after leaving office as a president, Mahama has only gotten an appointment from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Mahama was appointed co-mediator for the Gambian political crisis by the African Leaders. He was alongside Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari who was appointed chief-mediator.
It happened that the day of Mahama’s UN appointment in 2016 was Thursday; little wonder the news broke out on Thursday too. It is apparent that the reporters stumbled on the report and mistook it for a recent one.
Unfortunately, some new reports on the story bordering on Mahama’s comments on the UN appointment is still circulating on the media. However, it is clear that they are still referring to his last year appointment. Listen to this UN report on YouTube below for better understanding.
