Stop Stoking Tension In Ejura

The Ejura police have warned political actors to desist from fueling tension in the area following the arrest of three persons in connection with recent attacks on school feeding caterers at the Ejura Basic School.

Ejura District Police Commander Superintendent Anthony Appiah told Joy News the police will continue to protect the caterers as they work to retrieve their seized items.

Some supporters of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) have allegedly attacked caterers of the school feeding programme at the Ejura Basic School in the Ashanti region.

Eyewitnesses told Joy News the incident which occurred on last Thursday, led to the destruction of food prepared for school children. The attack has forced children to go without their lunch as the caterers refused to go to work. Since the announcement of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as winner of the 2016 elections, some supporters of the party have taken the law into their own hands confiscating public property. Apart from vandalizing and seizing toll booths, the supporters have tried to take over state institutions like the Passport Office.

The supporters have turned their rage on caterers of the school feeding programme.

He added that it seemed the police were overwhelmed by such reports, because when he reported the incident to them, he was told “they were too busy receiving similar cases so I should wait outside.”

Member of Parliament for the area, who is incensed by the situation called on the leadership of the NPP to call their supporters to order.

According to Mohammed Braimah, the NPP supporters have been to almost all the schools in the district and destroyed food being prepared for pupils.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council says the Ghana Police Service must do more than just arrest persons forcibly taking over public facilities – they must swiftly prosecute them to serve as a deterrence to others contemplating similar actions.

The Council in a statement signed by its General Secretary, Apostle Sam Antwi, lauded the Police for the arrests made and pledged its commitment to support the law enforcement agencies to ward off any political interference in their work.

They have also backed calls for President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to add his voice by calling on the party supporters to order.
