TEMA Residents In Development (TRID), a youth group based in Tema in the Greater Accra Region, has condemned a purported threat by Ga-Dangme youth on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to nominate all metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives (MMDCEs) solely from the Greater Accra Region.
According to the Ga-Dangme group, failure on the part of President Akufo-Addo to comply with their plea will incur their wrath.
But in a quick rebuttal, TRID, in a statement, described the demand by the Ga-Dangme group as ‘dirty, deadly and tribal comment’ which is being championed by people with parochial interest.
In a statement signed and issued by its leaders—Percy Opata, Ursula Tagoe and Epraim Atuburoah—yesterday, TRID condemned the ethnocentric statements, noting that it was borne out of malice.
The group urged President Akufo-Addo not to succumb to the “empty threats” of the Ga-Dangme youth but rather “appoint people with proven track record, loyal and selfless individuals who share in his government’s vision irrespective of their tribal balance for such positions as promised by His Excellency himself during the campaign period.”
The TRID therefore, called on all well-meaning Ghanaians to condemn the behaviour of the group and speak against it.
“It is not only the press conference that is of concern to us but rather the conscious attempt by the group to incite Ga-Dangmes against all other ethnic groupings across the nation.
“…this is very dangerous for cohesion and peaceful coexistence within the nation. We want to put on record that the Greater Accra Region, and for that matter Tema, does not only comprise Ga speaking people,” the statement asserted.
TRID noted in their statement that it was quite “absurd and insincere” on the part of the Ga-Dangme group to have stated at its press conference that “if possible we shall demonstrate against the decision and create awareness that we are not mere pushovers, any attempt to deny our people these positions in our region will not be countenanced on our land.”
The group also urged President Akufo-Addo not to succumb to the “divisive and erroneous interpretation of the constitution by the Ga-Dangme youth but appoint people with proven track record.”
