The Social Security and National Insurance Trust SSNIT has said that plans are advanced for the rehabilitation of the Salaga Market and Rawlings Park in Accra.
The plan, according to the Director General of SSNIT, Ernest Thompson is to redevelop them into modern multi-purpose complexes.
Currently, these two facilities are not in the best shape.
Speaking on Wednesday [November 30, 2016] at the 2016 operations conference at Elmina in the Central Region, Mr. Thompson explained that
“As part of the programme of the Trust for 2017, the current Rawlings Park will be converted into a multi-purpose high-rise modern market, mixed-used development, and a car park complex. This obviously will reduce congestion, traffic, reckless parking intertwined with the endless hawking”.
Mr. Thompson added that “we targeted the Salaga Market too. It’s a Market which has been closed for years. The traders are outside on the streets. But it’s a very good fish market. If we can build a modern complex market there, it will also at least alleviate poverty. We are going to demolish the old one and build a modern complex in conjunction with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly”.
“Since workers and organized labour are the resource base of the Social Security Scheme, we are supporting Trades Union Congress TUC, by constructing a training complex for them at Ridge near Ecobank Head Office, a Children’s Library Complex and a Court Complex at former Victoriaborg in Accra”. Mr. Thompson stated.
SSNIT according to Mr. Thompson has also taken over the completion of the Affordable Housing Estate Project in five regions. “Borteyman in Accra has been completed and is already on sale. Asokore Mampong has commenced and is also going on steadily”.
The SSNIT Operations Conference 2016 was of the theme consolidating Technology to Maximize Operational Efficiency for superior customer experience. It was attended by both regional directors and managers across the country.
