The incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for Bantama Constitutency, Henry Kwabena Kokofu has denied media reports that he has resigned from the New Patriotc Party (NPP).
A statement purportedly signed by him Saturday evening noted that the first term parliamentarian had left the opposition party due to outstanding issues in the party in the constitutency.
But Kwabena Kokofu who lost the primaries with about 60 votes in an interview from Germany Monday on Accra-based Peace FM said he is still a member of the NPP.
He however confirmed in that he indeed filed his documents to contest as an independent candidate for the constituency.
“I am not ready to talk about why I took that decision but at the appropriate time, I will explain…the whole thing was miscommunicated,” he said in reaction to the question of why he choose to go solo.
He further claimed that he has ordered his representatives to go to the Electoral Commission (EC) and withdraw his documents as he is no more interested in going independent.
“I have not resigned from the NPP and will never resign and am not ready to talk about what pushed me to take that decision. I have called my people in Ghana to go to the EC and withdraw my nomination.,” he stated.
He therefore apologized to the rank and file of the party for taking that decision.
“I apologise to my flagbearer, Nana Akufo Addo, leaders of the party, former President J. A. Kufuor and other people who were disturbed by the news that I had gone independent. I render an unreserved and unconditional apology to all of them,” he said.
