Over the years I have been trying to follow elections of countries. My interest has always been on the victory speech of the winning candidates, and the recent one by the US President – elect, Donald Trump raises some questions in my mind. Hear him;
…..”I’ve just received a call from Secretary Clinton. She congratulated us, it’s about us, on our victory, and I congratulated her and her family on a very, very hard-fought campaign. I mean, she fought very hard. Hillary has worked very long and very hard over a long period of time, and we owe her a major debt of gratitude for her service to our country. I mean that very sincerely.
“Now it’s time for America to bind the wounds of division, have to get together. To all Republicans and Democrats and independents across this nation, I say it is time for us to come together as one united people. It’s time. I pledge to every citizen of our land that I will be president for all Americans, and this is so important to me.”
Prior to the election, all the candidates were trading insults, Trump being the worst culprit. In October 2016, The New York Times used two full pages of its paper to print out all the persons and organizations insulted by the President – elect on Twitter. Some of these insults one cannot even repeat because of bad language.
My challenge is this; why do Politicians think that they can divide the country during the election campaign and quickly turn around and say let’s get together and build our nation? Why will they intentionally wound themselves and then make 360o turnaround to pretend to be binding and healing those same wounds once they win the election?
On December 7, 2016, Ghana will be voting. For the past few months, our politicians have said so many things on campaign platforms – insults, ethnic and religious divisions etc.
At most by Friday, December 9, 2016 it may be clear who leads this country for the next four years. The question is; will that person have the courage to call on every Ghanaian to put their hands on the deck to help develop the country, after branding them ‘unintelligent’; ‘incompetent’; ‘irrational’ etc.?
Let it be known that it is not very easy bringing back the people together after they have been divided. Moreover, some wounds are very difficult to heal, even if they do, some of the scars may remain forever.
We should not hide in the name of campaign and intentionally hurt people and then make quick U-turn trying to make peace just because we need them to help us achieve our aim.
We are one people. We have only one nation. And one destiny awaits us.
