Sheriff Quaye from the Black Panthers Club made history on Tuesday November 15 when he was dressed with the National Lightweight Title Belt by H E President John Mahama at the Bukom Boxing Arena.
Quaye now (10-0-1, 6 KO’s) resisted the pressure from Benjamin Lamptey (10-0-1, 8 KO’s) and marched him boot for boot and punch for punch to win the vacant national lightweight belt before a packed arena including chiefs, dignitaries, boxing fans and NDC supporters.
Here is an interview with the media before the fight.
When we were scheduled to fight last month and he decided not to fight and I wasn’t happy because I trained for the fight and he pulled out. So this time he has agreed to fight so I’m happy.
On how he feels fighting for the vacant national lightweight belt:
My fans know how I do my things, they believe in my qualities and they know I’m going to win the title at stake. I’m not panicking, this fight is nothing to me I will do the job with ease.
On his reply to Benjamin Lamptey for saying he will teach him a lesson in the ring:
If you want a boxer to teach his colleague boxer a lesson in the ring, that person is me, I will discipline him in the ring that is what I will do to him in the ring. It is not about getting the opportunity to travel with the amateur team outside the shores of Ghana. We will be fighting at the professional level not amateur. He had the opportunity to travel outside if I had that opportunity I would have won gold for Ghana but he failed to do so, for me he is nobody.
On whether he will go for KO or travel the full rounds:
I will not be going for a KO, I will discipline him in the ring because he is nobody to me. If they lock the two of us in a room I will get out before him.
On his next move after winning the National title:
I’m ready for any boxer, so any boxer that challenges me I will fight that boxer.
On fighting at the newly built Boxing Arena:
The edifice will be commissioned so I have to make history which is by winning the belt.
On his final words to his fans ahead of the fight:
I thank my fans for their unflinching support
