Settlers Along the Bolga-Bawku Road Pose A Challenge To Rehabilitation Work

The rehabilitation and expansion works on the Bolgatanga- Bawku road is facing big challenges due to the refusal of settlers along the road to move to make way for the work to be done well.

Mr Francis Hammond, Chief Resident Engineer in charge of Supervision for the Galvaro Construction Firm, which is carrying out the work, said the people were adamant about being resettled within their communities so that the road could be expanded.

The most difficult places are the township areas which include Bolgatanga, Nabdam, Zebilla, Bazua and the Bawku areas, along the construction way, he said.

Mr Hammond made this known when Mr Rockson Ayine Bukari, the Upper East Regional Minister, paid a working visit to the area to inspect the ongoing work on the road.

Briefing the Minister, Mr Hammond said about eight kilometers stretch out of 110Km had been completed within three months and it was expected that the work would be finished in two and a half months.

The road when completed would contain dual carriage ways from Bolgatanga to Bawku, and a bye-pass in Bawku to allow heavy duty trucks pass outside the Bawku Township to ease congestion.

Mr Hammond told the Minister that it was difficult to access utilities such as water and electricity among others, which could motivate the workers to give off their best.

Mr Bukari told the construction firm to embark on mass education on the need for settlers to move away from the construction sites since it could be dangerous to their health.

He urged those on the construction way to relocate as those lands had been acquired by the government.

Mr Bukari said all contracts on the road that had been awarded to other contractors would be cancelled and re-awarded to the Galvaro since that would bring about uniform development on the road.

The Regional Minister was optimistic of the work of the contractor and said the work was going on at a good pace.
