Although making comebacks at a presidential level is not something common in the history of politics; these NDC loyalists strongly believe Mahama for 2020 is a possibility .
A handful of members at the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) have continued to endorse the idea of a second bid at presidency for ex President John Dramani Mahama. Such individuals are of the opinion that the ex president is the best option for the party in terms of continuity and legacy.
Former President Mahama suffered the worst election defeat of a sitting president in Ghana’s democracy. After the December 2016 general elections, Mr Mahama recorded 44.40 percent of valid votes cast, losing to New Patriotic Party’s Nana Akufo-Addo, who was endorsed by 53.85 percent of the electorate.

Most of his party members however have remained optimistic on a comeback for the northerner whose numerous achievements they say, can never be undermined.
Some of these individuals include NDC Member of Parliament for North Tongu Constituency, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa who says the ex President is the NDC’s best bet for 2020. Mr Ablakwa while speaking on Citi News on March 1, said he will gladly and willingly support Mahama’s bid for presidency in 2020, should the ex President declare candidacy.
Ablakwa’s praises of Mahama is just one out of the massive endorsements hurled at the former NDC leader, regarding a possible re-run in 2020. NDC Member of Parliament for Kumbungu, Ras Mubarak, has also expressed high hopes on another Mahama Presidency. According to him, Mahama has the capability of bringing the opposition party back into power in 2020.
These NDC members whom have expressed profound loyalty towards the ex President, have continued to intensify their calls for a comeback for the northerner. Some have gone as far as making plans of mobilizing people, to stand against Mahama’s decision to resist a comeback.
It can be recalled that former sports Minister Oko Vanderpuije, had said on radio that Mahama will be forced by party members to contest for Presidency in 2020. That is nothing when compared to the assertion made by NDC’s 2016 campaign co-ordinator, Kofi Adams who insisted on mobilizing people to persuade Mahama into vying once again. This is just to mention a few.
However, not all stakeholders share the same opinion with these NDC loyalists. Stating clear their reasons, the family of ex President Mahama had stressed that the former President would not be making a comeback in 2020. While the NDC is anticipating a return, former President Mahama’s family said he wont be vying for presidency a second time, because has given enough to the NDC and needs to take a bow from local politics.
Younger brother to the former President, Ibrahim Mahama who made this known, also said his family have advised him against making a comeback.
Mahama himself has also been reported by some sources to have declined from contesting for Presidency in year 2020. Ghana will have to wait till 2020 to find out if indeed the former president has plans of vying again for presidency. Although making comebacks at a presidential level is not something common in the history of politics; these NDC loyalists strongly believe it Mahama for 2020 is a possibility.
