THERE is a growing phenomenon in some drinking spots in the capital city, Accra, where ‘wee’ also known as Indian hemp, are sold openly to patrons of these drinking spots, Weekend Today can confirm.
Weekend Today’s investigations showed that places where ‘wee’ smoking is allowed and are sold as well always have high patronage compared to where the act is not allowed.
Our investigations further uncovered that these drinking sports are found in areas including Odorkor Official Town at Kotso Street, Awoshie Assemblies of God Street, Kwashieman Anglican Church Cluster of Schools, Wulomei Street, and New Fadama— all suburbs of Accra.
Interestingly, these drinking spots had embossed on them names like ‘War Before Peace,’ ‘Jah Glory,’ ‘Road to Kingston Town,’ ‘Rastaman Has No friend,’ “No Place To Call Home,” “Wisdom Is In Herbs,” and ‘God Is One,’ among others.
According to our investigations, these drinking spots operate at the chagrin of residents and shop owners living in and around.
For instance, at Kwashieman Anglican cluster of schools, Weekend Today learnt that the spot operates from 4:00 a.m., -10:00 p.m., each day.
“Even when school is in session, patrons drink all kinds of hard liquor and smoke ‘wee’ and sometimes sing profane songs,” a resident of the area who agreed to talk to our reporter told Weekend Today.
According to some teachers at the school, who spoke on condition of anonymity, all their efforts to put an end to that have come to nothing.
Some pupils also complained about the activities of the drinking bar operators which were affecting their studies.
They said the ‘wee’ smokers are always on the school compound even during classes’ hours.
Also at Kotso Street, residents, chop bar operators and hairdressers complained about the activities of drinking spots.
According to them, “they have lost many of their clients due to the activities of the drinking spots.
“Owura (referring to this reporter which means mister) we can’t complain, even police officers sometime come here and smoke with them,” a chop bar operator alleged.
The situation was not different from Awoshie Market Assemblies of God Street.
Scores of customers were seen smoking the substance (wee) in open space.
A bar operator told Weekend Today that: “Even though we are operating illegally if you don’t add to it you won’t get customers.”
United Nations 2014 report placed Ghana as the number one consumer of Indian hemp in the world, remaining first in Africa, but dropped to third on the global rankings in 2015.
