The Madina Police have arrested a manager of a sachet water company who is alleged to belong to a robbery gang that has been attacking some residents of Madina, Accra.
The suspect, Edward Kojo Antwi, was arrested when he and a member of the gang allegedly attacked and robbed a family at Madina Estate.
Antwi’s accomplice, identified only as Eric, alias Abodam, was shot by the police during an exchange of fire between the robbers and the police.
Eric is said to have died later after escaping police arrest.
An Isuzu Trooper vehicle, with the registration number GR 8237 and belonging to Antwi, as well as some stolen items, were retrieved from the scene of the attack.
Incident
Briefing the Daily Graphic, the Madina Divisional Crime Officer, Superintendent of Police Mr Joseph Oppong, said about 3 a.m. on March 28, 2017, the two suspects attacked a man and his wife while they were sleeping.
Armed with a pistol and face masks, the suspects allegedly broke into the victims’ room and demanded the money they claimed the couple had sent home the previous night.
When the victims denied knowledge of any such money, the suspects dragged them from the bedroom to the living room, where they tied the victims’ hands behind them.
Stolen items
The suspects eventually ransacked the room, making away with mobile phones, necklaces, wedding rings and laptops.
Luck, however, eluded them when one of the victims’ daughters, whose room was not visited by the robbers, made a phone call to her friend, who also called the police for help.
Mr Oppong said a police patrol team arrived as the robbers were about leaving the scene. on seeing the police, Eric started firing at them.
Eric was hit by a bullet when the police fired back at the robbers.
According to Mr Oppong, the suspects ran back into the house and jumped through a window on the first floor.
In the process, Antwi, who got injured, was arrested, while Eric, who sustained gunshot wounds, managed to escape.
The police said they later had information that Eric had died at his sister’s residence in Tarkwa, where he had allegedly gone to seek medical treatment.
