Following plans to implement a National Towing Project, Road Safety Management Services Limited (RSML) at the weekend deployed its first batch of state-of-the-art towing trucks.
The deployment by RSML, which is part of the pilot phase of the national towing project expected to kick-start on May 01, 2017 will last for a one-month period (the whole of April 2017).
Briefing a cross-section of journalists in Accra, Operations Manager of RSML, Engineer Kwadwo Osei, disclosed that the object of the project is to remove abandoned or broken down vehicles on the country’s highways, and thus help prevent road accidents.
For the pilot phase, RSML will deploy fourteen of its tow trucks.
He pointed out that statistics available show that many of the road accidents in this country are as a result of disabled and abandoned vehicles on designated roads.
“…now with these state-of-the art towing trucks whenever this happens and we are called we will move in with these towing trucks and clear our highways,” the operations manager of RSML firmly assured.
According to him, their two trucks will be position at various vantage points.
These locations, he divulged, include Tetteh Quarshie Roundabout, Mallam Junction through to Kasoa, Amasaman, Suhum, Bonsu Junction and all the way to the Ashanti Region.
Engineer Osei also used the opportunity to reveal that when the project is rolled out in May 01, 2017, his outfit will launch ambulances equipped with paramedics and some basic first aid equipment to attend to injured persons on the highways.
“There will also be motorbikes that will be patrolling our highways to ensure that our roads are safe,” he further disclosed.
He mentioned that RSML will be collaborating with National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), Driver, Vehicle and Licensing Authority (DVLA) and the Ghana Police Service.
The purpose of this collaboration is to effectively implement the operational strategies of the national towing project and ensure its success.
On the fee that will be charged, Mr. Osei indicated that that will depend on the category of vehicle that has broken down, adding that there will be a comprehensive education on the project which will be championed by NRSC.
When Today sought to find out how one can access the service in areas where these RSML tow trucks will not be positioned, Mr. Osei said: “For the piloting as I mentioned we are deploying 14, but for the national project we will deploy a minimum of 80 towing trucks. Since this is the first time we are doing this we will be gathering data and if it comes to a point that we realise that there some routes that we would have to increase the fleet we have the capacity,” he said
