Ghanaian boxers, Richard Commey, Duke Micah and Frederick Lawson made the nation proud by retaining their WBC World titles at the Bukom boxing Arena in Accra on Saturday.
The bouts organised by Streetwise Promotions in conjunction with Errol Hawk Sports Management witnessed thousands of boxing enthusiast including President Akufo-Addo and Former President, J. J Rawlings to mark Ghana’s 60th anniversary celebrations.
The first bout saw undefeated Ghanaian boxer Duke Micah stopping his Mexican opponent Jonathan Aguilar in the eighth round to win the WBC international bantamweight title.
The 25 year-old champion started on a bright note in front of hometown fans in the Bukom Boxing Arena and was trailing on the scorecards when he sprang to life in the eighth round which later resulted in the technical knockout of Jonathan Aguilar who suffered an injury in his arm.
After overcoming Matthew Chanda in November 2016, Micah has now fought 21 bouts without a loss.
The second bout also witnessed Frederick Lawson winning a majority decision (116-113, 114-114 and 119-109) victory over Jamaica’s Sakima Mullings to win the vacant WBC international silver welterweight belt.
Despite showing signs of rust after almost 2 years out of the canvas, Lawson stood tall to claim the title at stake.
In the main bout, Richard Commey claimed a unanimous decision win over Belgium’s Hedi Slimani, with a 116-112, 117-113 and 116-112 win.
Boxing fanatics were thrilled with mouth-watering scintillating boxing as the two boxers showcased their class. Slimani was swift with his punches but which was not heavy to wither Commey who retaliated back with much more power.
Round six got heated with influx of punches from Commey, however Hedi responded back in style as he stormed Richard unexpectedly nearly causing a knock. Commey’s flow resulted in a deep cut on the face of Belgian with blood spurting out but Hedi still persisted on to the end.
Richard Commey is now looking forward to another World title opportunity after he lost the vacant IBF World lightweight title to Robert Easter Jnr. in September 2016.
