Some employees of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) calling themselves Concerned Staff of ECG have charged the new Minister of Energy, Mr. Boakye Agyarko, to prevent and if possible, eliminate political interference in the activities of ECG in order not to plunge the nation into another era of erratic power supply.
According to him, the unnecessary political interference in the ECG prevents the company from operating effectively which deprives Ghanaians of efficient power supply.
In an interview with Today in Cape Coast over the weekend, spokesperson of the group, Mr. Seth Birikorang, noted that ECG staff members were prepared to use their strength, experience and sacrifice to make Mr. Agyarko the best Minister if he heeds to their plea.
He pointed out that for ECG to be the best reliable and profitable power supply in Africa, the new minister has to ensure that government settles its huge indebtedness to the power distributing company, introduce performance contract among all the leaders of ECG, abrogate the intended concession and improve their conditions service.
“If he fails to do these, then the NPP must be prepared to serve for only one term,” he warned.
Mr. Birikorang observed that the previous government created the impression that all is well with the energy sector but recent revelations point to the contrary.
“The energy providing companies are so heavily indebted to the gas and crude oil suppliers that the need has arisen for the new government to expeditiously negotiate for payment of outstanding indebtedness and settle them in order to avert the erratic power supply,” he said.
“Ghana abounds in expertise and technocrats in the power sector. The NDC’s intention to cede ECG to a private company which is foreign based would have deprived the good people of Ghana their birthrights,” he added.
He condemned the constant accusations and blames on ECG for every outage, saying they were “unfair” since the contributions of other entities in the energy sector go a long way to satisfy the energy needs of the people.
The spokesperson commended President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for appointing Mr. Boakye Agyarko as Minister in charge of the sector, and expressed the hope that he will bring his expertise and excellent background to bear
in order not to usher the nation into another erratic power era.
