FIVE male prisoners in uniform were yesterday seen begging for alms at the Odawna Market at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra.
The incident happened in the early hours of yesterday when the inmates who were being escorted by a warden stopped by the Odawna Market to beg both traders and commuters for alms.
The incident which happened in the presence of our reporter attracted the attention of both passersby and some traders.
Our checks revealed that the prisoners were returning from their routine penal labour duties when they stopped by to engage the traders.
According to the traders, it was not the first time such incident had happened.
“Sometimes these prisoners come here and anytime they pass here we give them some money as an act of kindness since we hear life in our prisons is extremely difficult,” a trader, Yaa Lartey, told Weekend Today.
Another trader, who gave his name as Alfred Donkoh, was very pathetic towards the prisoners.
According to him, some of the prisoners were just victims of circumstances, and therefore, must be treated with love and respect, “so they don’t feel neglected by society.”
