Weekend Today can confirm that prices of hair braiding and hair cut in some hairdressing (beauty) salons and barbering shops in the capital city, Accra, have shot up.
A visit to some beauty salons and barbering shops by our reporters revealed that the price of a male adult hair-cut has increased from Gh¢10.00 to Gh¢15.00 at barbering shops with air-conditioners.
But those shops without air-conditioners were charging Ghc7.00 for a male adult hair-cut instead of Ghc5.00 they were charging last year.
Nana Akufo-AddoIn the same instance, the paper observed that the price of braiding and weave-on in beauty salons in some parts of Accra like Dansoman has increased from Gh¢ 70.00 to Gh¢ 90.00.
For example, a simple washing of a lady’s hair, which originally was Gh¢10.00, has gone up to Gh¢15.00.
Speaking to Weekend Today in an interview some of the hair dressing salon operators attributed the increase to a multiplicity of factors.
For instance, they mentioned high electricity bills, low patronage, rent increase and numerous taxes as some of the factors for the increment.
A barber at Dansoman, a suburb of Accra, Jonathan Kofi Agyekum, had this to say to Weekend Today: “previously I used to pay between Gh¢ 40.00 and Gh¢ 50.00 as monthly electricity bill, but it has now jumped up to Gh¢150.00 a month.”
He added: “I also buy water to wash my barbering equipment which I must consider when charging.”
The complaints of the huge cost of managing hairdressing salons in Dansoman were not different from hairdressers at Avenor, Bubuashie, Abeka-Lapaz, Kaneshie, Awoshie, Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Achimota and Odorkor—all suburbs of Accra.
