Preparations are underway in Parliament as outgoing President John Dramani Mahama addresses the Sixth Parliament of the Fourth Republic today, Thursday, January 5.
The event was originally scheduled for December 22 but had to be postponed for unknown reasons.
With the current Parliament expected to be dissolved on Friday, the president as per Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution is expected to tell the 275 members the state of the nation as he leaves office on January 7.
President Mahama had delivered his first state-of-the-nation to the Fifth Parliament on January 4, 2013 on behalf of President John Atta Mills, who passed on the previous year, forcing a postponement of the constitutional exercise.
But he returned virtually a month after that to deliver his first address to Parliament as he assumed the reigns as the Fourth President of the Fourth Republic.
That address was themed ‘Opportunities for all’.
Thursday’s exercise will be more or less a farewell address by President Mahama, Keta Member of Parliament said in an interview with TV3’s Catherine Frimpongmaa.
“It will be solemn,” said Richard Quashigah.
He said the address will invariably touch on the soft spots of many in the House and some may be moved to tears.
