President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will on Tuesday, the 21st of February, deliver a State of the Nation Address to the Parliament.
This was made known when the Speaker of the Parliament, Hon. Prof. Michael Oquaye made the announcement on the floor of the House during today [Friday]’s sitting. According to the Speaker, the President notified him of his intention via a letter dated Thursday, 9th February.
“…I wish to notify you that I intend to deliver a message on the state of the nation on February 21, 2017. Please accept Mr Speaker, the assurance of my highest esteem and best wishes,” part of Akufo-Addo’s letter reads.
Nana Addo indicated in the letter, that his intention is in accordance with Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution which states that: “The President shall, at the beginning of each session of Parliament and before a dissolution of Parliament, deliver a message on the state of the nation”.
The State of the Nation Address which is going to be the first from the fifth President of the fourth republic, will be delivered on the floor of Ghana’s House of Parliament.
The President through the Address, will disclose to the Parliament, the state of the country’s various sectors – Food and Agriculture, Health, Education, Security, Science and Technology, Energy, Economy, etc. as were left by the immediate past administration. He is also expected to relate to the House, his developmental plans and policies for achieving his goals for the country.
Nana Akufo-Addo since after his inauguration as President on January 7, has been occupied with setting up his administrative crew. The President has so far nominated 36 ministers of state, 25 of whom have been vetted, approved and sworn into their various offices. Vetting of the remaining 11 was just concluded this week and are yet to be approved by the Parliament for onward swearing in.
The President has also appointed 10 regional ministers, presidential staffers as well as heads of government institutions such as the National Service Scheme (NSS), National Communications Authority (NCA) and the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), etc.
