President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will tomorrow, Tuesday, February 21, 2017 deliver his maiden State of the Nation Address (SONA) on the floor of Parliament.
In a letter to the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Aaron Mike Ocquaye, on Friday, February 10, 2017, the president said: “pursuant to and as required by Article 67 of the Constitution, I wish to notify you that I intend to deliver a message on the State of the Nation on February 21, 2017.
The letter added: “Please accept Mr. Speaker, the assurance of my highest esteem and best wishes.”
Ghanaians would be expecting President Akufo-Addo, who won the December 7, 2016 election on a change campaign to tell them which of his electoral promises will be implemented this year to better their lot.
With the widespread attack by his p party’s foot-soldiers on members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), and the controversy over whether it is prudent to celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of Ghana’s independence, President Akufo-Addo is expected to address issues about security, economy and patriotism.
He is also expected to tell Ghanaians how he intends to execute his polices and programmes for the next one year.
Top among them will be the one-district one-factory, one-million-dollar one-constituency, one-village one-dam among many others the NPP ) campaigned on to win the election by a greater margin.
Also, he is expected to talk about his educational policies and programmes, especially the free senior high school (SHS) policy as well as tax reduction.
In an interview with Today at the weekend, some Ghanaians were very optimistic that President Akufo-Addo would fulfill all the promises he made to Ghanaians.
Although, they said it will take sometime for the government to transform the economy, they had no doubt in their minds that things will be better soon.
For instance, a trader at Madina Market, Adwoa Fofie, said she expects President Akufo-Addo to reduce taxes so as to enable traders to meet their targets and contribute meaningfully to the economy.
She was particularly happy with the free SHS policy which the president announced last week.
“I’m so delighted that my children will go to school without paying school fees. This is great and I know Nana (referring to President Akufo-Addo) can do it.”
