The lead counsel of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) Nii Ayikoi Otoo said the barely 24-hour extension ordered by the Supreme Court to the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) may not favour some political parties.
He said he would rather the deadline was Wednesday, November 9.
According to the former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, the Supreme Court’s judgment on Monday, November 7 was for all political parties aggrieved by the disqualification of their flagbearers.
Therefore, it would have been appropriate if more time was given for all.
Mr Otoo expressed these sentiments moments after the judgement on Monday, November 7.
The Commission was seeking a Supreme Court order to overturn a High Court judgement on October 28.
The High Court’s ruling gave Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom, PPP’s flagbearer, a chance to correct anomalies with his form and re-file.
But on Monday, October 31, the Commission went to the Supreme Court for a review of Justice Eric Kyei Baffour’s judgement.
President of the seven-member panel Justice Sophia Adinyira in her judgement on Monday, November 7 ordered the EC to give aggrieved parties up till close of Tuesday, November 8 for re-submission.
“Today is Monday and the close of day [Tuesday] 5 o’clock may not suit everybody,” Mr Otoo said, “and I thought that perhaps Wednesday could have been better.”
Already, Dr Nduom has been written to by the Commission to produce the defaulting subscriber at the head office of the EC by close of the new deadline for confirmation.
