Presidential candidates of the Progressive People’s Party, People’s National Convention and National Democratic Party expressed fears Thursday that the EC was using oppressive tactics against citing their initial disqualification on October 10 as an example.
They claimed in a joint statement that they had to waste six weeks fighting their disqualification, which they claimed “brought us untold hardships financially, emotionally and taken energy and precious time from our campaigns”.
According to them, the EC is using the regulations guiding the conduct of the 2016 elections “as an oppressive tool to punish and deny them equal opportunity to campaign during the critical times of the campaign season.
They further condemned the Commission for sitting unconcerned while incumbent President John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress exploit state apparatus and resources for his campaign without questions.
But Deputy Director of Communications at the EC has downplayed the claims noting that everything the Commission had done was within the laws governing the elections.
Notwithstanding, he said, the issues would be addressed at today’s IPAC meeting which will also address other allegations and issues raised by the New Patriotic Party in the run up to the elections which is 11 days away.
