A member of the Communications Team of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Charles Owusu, at the weekend donated food items and some African wears at the headquarters of the Ghana Prisons Service in Accra.
The food items included bags of rice, a gallon of cooking oil, bags of sugar, a box of Tasty Tom tomato paste and soft drinks. The rest were packs of toilet rolls and a box of Key Soap.
Making the donation on Friday, March 17, which fell on his birthday, an elated Mr. Owusu explained that it was important that “as Ghanaians we contribute, no matter how little it is, towards the upkeep of prisoners in this country.”
According to him, the donation was his widow’s mite in making sure that prisoners enjoy good meals.
“It behooves us as Christians and Muslims to care for prisoners so that we will all help in contributing towards their reformation after they serve their jail sentences,” the PPP communication member urged.
In the estimation of Mr. Owusu, prisoners must not be treated as “outcasts” but must be made to feel a “sense of belongingness.”
“We endanger society the more if we neglect them for the fact that they committed some heinous crimes and that are not part of us. In that sense they will serve their jail sentence and come back and commit more serious offences,” he cautioned.
Receiving the items on behalf of the Director General of Ghana Prisons Service, Director of Operations, Mrs. Josephine Fredua-Agyemang, thanked Mr. Owusu for what she described as a “wonderful gesture.”
“…it’s like they are now going to spend their Christmas; thank you very much for these bags of rice and the other items,” she expressed.
According to the director of operations, the donation by the PPP communications team member will complement government efforts towards taking care of inmates in the country.
